The running gags also get a little overcrowded as well. The first half was a lot stronger than the second half. Although one wishes the league episodes surrounding the message were better than they were. It does work with the message that things don't always work out the way you think it will and that it's ok to lose. Pretty much all the characters stay constant, Misty and Brock don't really have anything to do if it's not an episode revolving around them, and Ash wanted to be a Pokemon Master, but never really changed up his tactics or strategies, often got a number of badges out of pity (Even the show call's out on it with Blaine) and even passes on training when he needs it to compete the league.

Ash gets most of his pokemon and badges in the first 30 episodes, and then it's a 30 episode wait until we get the next one, with very few changes to any of the core teams pokemon inbetween (Charmander evolves to Charizard, Misty get's Togepi, Jessie and James get Lickitung and Victreebel that are only used in one episode in Indigo that's it). It honestly feels like you can cut a third of the episodes and still have plenty of filler to spare. You even get a good few emotional episodes in there as well (Charmander the Stray Pokemon, Pikachu's Goodbye and the previously mentioned Go West, Young Meowth) and even some creepy ones too (Tentacool and Tentacruel and the Sabrina's Gym episodes in particular.) If anything, it's when the show tries to be serious and have it's big battles is when the show falters the most (Perhaps why the Movie does not hold up as well as the series with it's dreadful third act dragging the whole thing down).īut I will say, the pacing is pretty bad in Pokemon. Team Rocket are the best characters in the series, often with the best lines, best gags and even best episodes (Holy Matrimony! and Go West, Young Meowth!) Team Rocket Grunts battle, Ship starts sinking with Heroes trapped inside, have to escape from the sinking ship) and the anime proves itself as much more memorable and enjoyable.
